Residents Awarded 82 Medals at the 2011 Senior Games
Eighty-two medals were awarded to 56 Willow Valley resident athletes who participated in the the 2011 Lancaster Senior Games – 47 GOLD; 18 SILVER; and 17 BRONZE. Additionally, four medals were won at the National Senior Games by four Willow Valley Resident participants. Congratulations to the Willow Valley teams! It’s not just luck that brings home medals. Residents train to prepare for the games. In addition to the Willow Valley Fitness Center classes and gym access, the Willow Valley Fitness Team holds Sport’s Specific Training from February through May to help prepare Resident athletes for the games. The classes focus on general conditioning to improve strength, cardio fitness, core work and flexibility to help prepare Residents to participate in their various sports. Although the class did not teach sport skills, it was aimed at exercising those areas that would benefit sport specific performance. Towards the end of the session, Residents then focused on practicing their various events.
Not only did our Residents participate in the local Lancaster Senior Games, but a team of four Resident athletes and two trainers journeyed across country to participate in the National Senior Games in Houston, Texas. The talk among the national attendees was that these were the most competitive games in memory. In fact, 245 records were broken, 5 of which were World’s Records.
